PURPOSE
Migrant workers have always been an important part of our community here in Singapore. Their hard work, blood, sweat and tears have laid the foundation for all the beautiful structures lining not only Singapore's skyline but those all over Singapore.

Migrant workers come to Singapore in search of better opportunities to provide a better life for their family back home. However, they are often subjected to ill-treatment or unfair practices by employers as they do not have a voice. They also do not get any media representation unless their story is of a severe nature. Through my project, I aim to learn more about their struggles and make a difference, in any way that I can, in their lives.

For my project, I chose to focus on migrant workers from India who are working in the construction industry in Singapore. The reason for my choice was because I have had many personal experiences with them. Being of Indian ethnicity, I have had passing conversations with many of these workers around my neighbourhood as well as in places such as Little India. Furthermore, in 2015, I had attended the Sinda Youth Leaders Seminar held in NUS. During that seminar, I was tasked to work with a group of like-minded individuals about a social issue that we felt strongly about- challenges faced by migrant workers from India. During the seminar I learnt more about the legal issues that they faced. Thus through this Guided Learning project I wanted to learn more about another issue that they faced that also aggravated their legal issues, which is language barrier.
