FINAL REFLECTION

I am very thankful that I was given the chance to carry out this Guided Learning Project. Initially, I was very hesitant on whether I should opt for this module as I was afraid that I would not be able to achieve much through this project. Being just a single person, I was unsure of what I could do to make an impact in this area. However, I am glad that I decided to take a leap and try this out as I have learnt many invaluable lessons throughout the course of this project.

I learnt more about the daily struggles of migrant workers in Singapore. Previously, I did not have much insight as to why they were facing so many struggles here. I only knew that they were facing problems and they did not have a chance to fight for their rights. After deciding to embark on this project, the various research that I did gave me new perspectives on the problems that are present in their lives.

I decided to work on language barrier as it functioned as a problem that aggravated other issues that they faced here in Singapore. For example, many of them face discrimination from the locals here. I believe that this discrimination exists because there is not much interaction between the two parties due to language barrier. Without interactions, they continue to be discriminated and are not considered to be important members of our economy and community. Furthermore, they are unable to communicate the problems that they face to authority figures as they would need a translator to be present. Without knowing the language, it is easier for them to be exploited by their employers as they are not able to easily seek help.

Therefore, although my efforts are starting small with translations of food and daily necessities, I hope that these efforts will grow further to include other projects that slowly break the language barrier. Beyond this Guided Learning project, I hope to work on the picture book further to include more categories and items. I would also like to approach organisations in Singapore that work with migrant workers to see if they would like to take over this project to execute it at a larger scale. Currently, there is a compulsory settling in programme for migrant workers who come to Singapore. This picture book could perhaps be distributed during that programme to migrant workers who can use it to help them.
